by Malani Govinnage Jimmy Engineer, an internationally acclaimed artist and social worker from Pakistan is now in Sri Lanka, to have a series of 'Food and Fun' programs for 'special' children - physically and mentally handicapped, orphans and underprivileged the first of which takes place today at Negombo Browns Beach Hotel for hundred special children. The Union Bank of Pakistan in Colombo sponsors the program. Jimmy Engineer has already arranged for such several programs in the hotels in Colombo, Kandy and several other towns. A peaceful crusader to help bring peace, equality and respect for human dignity in society, he has led more than 50 Walks for various causes in Pakistan, one major theme for his Walks being creating awareness about human rights and human dignity, "All these causes I walk for are close to my heart", he says. Once he led a walk from one end of Pakistan to the other, covering more than 4,700 kilo meters. It was a Solo Peace Walk he did to create an awareness about peace in South Asia region. It was a time when the tension between India and Pakistan was at its peak. A prolific painter, he generally gives away the earnings from his art to carry out his social work. Many of his paintings are in various collections in many parts of the world. |
