by Sandasen Marasinghe An OIC found guilty of torturing a suspect while in remand custody was sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment by Colombo High Court Judge Eric Basnayake. OIC of Giribawa Police, former OIC (crimes) of the Kirulapona Police, Inspector Keerthi Bandara Edirisinghe was indicted with torturing M. D. Wesley Norman on April 13, 2001 at Kirulapona Police. Norman was taken into custody in connection with theft. The suspect had suffered injuries on his face and shoulder. The High Court Judge also imposed a Rs 10,000 fine and one year's rigorous imprisonment in default. State Counsel Shanil Kularatne appeared for the Attorney-General. |
