Security division for judicial officers

by Ranga Chandrarathne

A decision was taken to form a Security Division under the purview of the Police Department, similar to the Ministerial Security Division, to provide protection to Judicial Officers, said Minister of Justice and Judicial Reforms W.D.J. Senaviratne.

The Minister who participated in preliminary discussions with Bar Council representatives and Judicial officers at the Ministry yesterday, said the Ministry condemns the attack on the Balapitiya High Court Judge.

The meeting was convened by the Minister following the recent attacks and threats on Judicial Officers.

"We strongly condemn the attack on the Balapitiya High Court Judge and our Ministry considers with grave concern the alleged assault and attempted physical harm on the Hight Court Judge, Balapitiya by a person who forcibly entered her resident at about 3.00 a.m on July 29, 2004.

This is another incident consequent on the deterioration of law and morals in the country which has been going for a long time," the Minister said.

"This is a very despicable act. I believe that the time has come to take more effective a serious action to protect the judiciary," the Minister said. He also said the Magistrate of Hambantota and another Judicial Officer serving at Avissawella were attacked recently.

The service of two police officers will be provided to judicial officers at the Courts and another two police officers' service at their residences. The special security will be provided to violent-prone Magistrate's Courts, the Minister said.

Inspector General of Police Indra de Silva, Secretary of the Ministry of Justice and Judicial Reforms Suhada Gamlath, Additional Secretary to the Ministry, Lalani Perera, representatives of the Judicial Officers, High Court Judges Sarath Ambepitiya, Rohini Perera, District Judge of Colombo, S.M.S. Samarakoon and Chief Magistrate of Colombo Sarojini Kusala Weerawardene, representatives of the Bar Council, Ikram Mohmed PC and Anoma Gunathilaka, and Secretary of the Judicial Services Commission P.W.D.C. Jayathilaka were present.
