Slocombe back to brush Indoor cricketers Craig Slocombe Australian-based Sri Lanka national coach for the forthcoming Indoor Cricket World Cup returned to the island early morning on Wednesday to steer the national squad to face their ultimate challenge - The 'Hutch Indoor Cricket World Cup' 2004 held from October 8 - 16 at Thalawathugoda. Craig trained the national squad for a while and returned to Australia in June for 6 weeks to play in the national league in Australia as well as to gather vital information about the Australians who are favourites in this World Cup. Ceylon Indoor Cricket Association chose Slocombe as the head of their brain trust in hope of winning the World Cup on home turf. Australia has won the past 4 World Cups and the locals are doing everything within themselves to topple the Aussies. Craig Slocombe who was a member of the last winning World Cup team with Australia will be a big asset for the Sri Lankans when they confront the likes of New Zealand, South Africa, and England. Although Sri Lanka are currently ranked 3rd in both men's and women's, they will have to be at their best to hold on to their ranking let alone winning the cup. On his arrival Craig stated that having already won a World Cup as a player it would be icing on the cake to coach a winning side. Also he stated that it is a huge challenge to coach a country like Sri Lanka who is oozing with talent in both indoor and outdoor cricket. Asela Pathirana will be captaining Sri Lanka men's team with Chrishantha Pieris as his deputy. |
