Ananda outsmart Isipatana, enters semi final

by Chris Dhambarage

Ananda College powered their way into the semifinals of the Milo Schools President's Trophy knock out rugby tournament with an exciting 18 points to 16 points win over Isipatana in their quarterfinal match played at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

The Anandians collected their points from six penalties having led 12-3 at half time. Isipatana responded with one goal and three penalties. Ananda full back Nadeesha Chaturanga was the matchwinner as he fired across all six penalties while producing a superb exhibition of place kicking.

The Anandians went into the last minute of the game trailing by a solitary point 15-16 after Isipatana had taken the lead mid way in the second half.

Ananda were awarded a penalty by referee Orvile Fernando and Nadeesh Chaturanga responded magnificently to turn the game in their favour. Isipatana were set to avenge their defeat in the league tournament when they took the lead for the first time mid way in the second half. Wing three quarter Asitha Sandaruwan had the credit of scoring the solitary try of the game with Manjula Prasad adding the extra points. Prasad had earlier put over three penalties to keep Isipatana's hopes alive but also missed a crucial kick shortly before the final whistle which certainly cost them the game.

In the fourth and final quarterfinal match Wesley College came from behind to beat St. Joseph's College by 18 points to 14 points under lights at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

The Wesleyites collected their points from one goal, one try and two penalties while the Josephians who led 7-3 at half time responded with two goals.

The Wesleyites were trailing during the latter stages of the game but a last minute try from Neranjan Wickremaratne helped them to pull off a thrilling win from the jaws of defeat.

Earlier Tyronne Harrison scored their first try with Rukshan Omar adding the extra points and also putting over two penalties.

Wesley will now meet Ananda in one semifinal while Kingswood will take on their home town rivals St. Anthony's College in the second semifinal next week.
