'Dahasak Maha Wev' launch today

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

The ceremonial inauguration of the rebuilding of Hawanpalessa Weva, the first tank to be renovated by the United People's Freedom Alliance Government under its Dahasak Maha Wev (thousand tanks) project will be held at Kattambuwawa, Yapahuwa today at 10.00 am.

Dahasak Maha Wev project is the UPFA Government's nation building exercise which has earmarked the renovation of 10,000 tanks throughout the country within the next four years under the theme of "reviving a rich irrigation based civilisation and rebuilding a prosperous nation".

Of them 1,000 tanks will be renovated by the end of this year, an Agriculture Ministry spokesman told the Daily News yesterday.

After the first sod of earth is cut by a farmer of Yapahuwa, the reconstruction work of the Hawanpalessa Weva will be symbolically commenced amid a gathering of Parliamentarians, invitees and a large number of farmers in the respective area.

He said over 500 Buddhist monks will chant Seth Pirith to invoke their blessings on the launch of Dahasak Maha Wev project. Several traditional and cultural events will enliven this national event. Over 1,500 drummers will also participate in momentous occasion to symbolise the proximity between the village and the tank.

As a special feature, a Wev song will be performed by over 30 popular singers. Arrangements have been made to distribute this wev song among the people who attend to this national event.

The National Organising Committee of the project has decided to present a special memento to those participating in this ceremony. In addition, 1000 National flags and 1000 special Wev flags will also be hoisted at the venue, he said.

"This UPFA Government's venture to revive our ancient tanks is expected to educate and create an awareness among public on the agri-based society, we have evolved as a part and parcel of our natural habitat, the tank, the temple and the village. Through the ages, the waterways of our fertile island have enriched the villages around them, by being their main means of livelihood," he said.
