Celebrates Diamond Jubilee of service

Rev. Sr. Damien Dissanaike celebrates her Diamond Jubilee on August 20 as a Sister of Charity of Jesus and Mary.

She entered the S.C.J.M. Religious Congregation in 1942 and spent her youth serving in the Convents of Galle, Matara, Kegalle and Ratnapura giving her talents to the field of music.

At 'Supem Uyana' and 'Dayamina' she worked to help the "Special Child" and is one of the pioneer Sisters of Supem Uyana. At Supem Uyana she earned the love and affection of not only the "Special Child" but of all those who came in contact with her.

When one recalls the past years one will see that kindness and compassion knew no bounds. She was generous to all never expecting anything in return, she remained a special friend to the down trodden and always gave her time ungrudgingly to solve their problems. As we know the problems were plenty regarding the "Special Child". To the parents she was a great solace and a comfort. She shared in both their joys and sorrows and would never lose an opportunity to console and encourage them.

This was very vividly depicted at the service she rendered in her last years in Dayamina, Pelawatte and Eheliyagoda. She praised and appreciated the service of others. The remarkable role she silently played in so many of the Sisters of Charity organisations is yet another hallmark of her exemplary character. She served in practically every community. It would undoubtedly be the view of the many who had the privilege of associating with her. She is a loyal friend a person could have in lifetime.

This tribute will not be complete without the reference to her consecrated life of 60 Diamond years, spent in the great service of God, living the consecration joyously, accepting the call courageously facing every situation with faith.

Now in her retirement she is residing at the Our Lady of Lourdes Convent in Ranwala, Kegalle.
