Prison should be a rehabilitation camp - Commissioner General of Prisons

Maharagama special correspondent, Wehelle Piyathilake

The Prison should not be a torture house. It should be a brain washing rehabilitation camp. Nobody is born as a murderer, culprit or a law breaker. All are born alike. The corrupt society is responsible for all these misfortune, said the Commissioner General of Prisons, Rumy Marzook speaking at scouts ceremony held in the Welikada Prison recently.

Speaking further Marzook said, "More punishment cannot reform and rehabilitate people. Once a person is rehabilitated in a prison he should be treated as a good person in the society. If the society ignors him he will hate the society. The scout movement teaches us loving each other, being kind to others, being sympathetic and live and lot live' concept.

We have a group of 20 scouts in our prison. They all are under 25 years. They have become honest, kind and peaceful youth through this movement.

We wish to establish Scout Groups in other prisons also. Preliminary scout badges were presented to twenty prison scouts by the Commissioner General of Prisons, Rumy Marshook.
