Sarasaviya Awards ceremony today The 29th Sarasaviya Film Awards Ceremony will be held tonight at the BMICH, Colombo. Twenty six films screened in 2003 will vie for 30 awards. There will be cash awards amounting to Rs.500,000. Sarasaviya readers have voted for their favourite actor and actress for 2003. The Ranapala Bodhinagoda Memorial Award for Film Literature will be presented to an eminent film writer while Rana Thisara awards will be presented to two outstanding film personalities who have rendered a lifelong service to Sinhala cinema. All other award winners have been selected by an independent panel of judges. Renowned Indian film artiste Adur Gopala Krishnan will be a guest of honour at the awards ceremony. Among the movies in contention for the awards are Pura Sakmana, Sudu Kaluwara, Yakada Pihatu, Sulang Kirilli, Sakman Maluwa and Wekanda Walawwa. These films were screened during the Sarasaviya Film Festival at the Regal Cinema, Colombo from August 11 to 17. Thani Thatuwen Piyambanna will not be considered for awards at the director's request. This year's festival will feature a number of new events including a live webcast of the award ceremony on the Internet and a two day exhibition titled 'Sarasaviya Cinema Pelahara' where people could witness all details of film-making. This event was held at the BMICH on August 17 and 18. Among the key features of the exhibition were the history of the local cinema, screening of six famous local films, musical shows and screen tests enabling film directors find young actors and actresses. The National Lotteries Board is the sponsor of this year's Sarasaviya Film Festival while Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) and Lakhanda Radio will be the media sponsors. |
