CEB's second wind power plant at Kalpitiya by Irangika Range The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has decided to set up its second wind power plant at Kalpitiya in the Puttalam District. This 30MW utility of wind power plant will help promote the local power and energy sector. The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), Additional General Manager - Transmission Ranjith Gunawardana said, Kalpitiya is the best site for this plant because of the high wind potentials along the Kalpitiya coast. "Access difficulties and initial capital cost are very high up country compared to the coast area. The CEB already has a 3MW small wind plant at Hambantota, but the capacity is not enough to meet the country's power and energy demand. The new plant is expected to provide ten times larger capacity than the Hambantota plant," he said. This year the Deputy Minister of Power and Energy Mahindananda Aluthgamage with CEB officials participated in the power and energy-promoting seminar in Germany. Many proposals were discussed to promote the sector in developing countries. " We discussed new major proposals to uplift the local power and energy sector by gaining financial support from the German government," he said. "The initial capital cost is very high to set up the new plant. The per unit price is also high at the plant. The estimated capital cost of around US$30 million is expected to be raised with a grant from a renewable energy fund set up recently by Germany," he said. |
