Holcim takes Lanka to world

Holcim international has taken Sri Lanka's concept of annual award ceremonies as a role model and decided to hold it globally. The first award ceremony was introduced in 2000 and it was then known as Sansta Awards. The Holcim international will conduct their awards ceremony in line with this said Holcim Lanka, Managing Director, Peter Spirig.

This global awards ceremony would be organised to recognise innovations and initiatives at a global level and focus on community development projects on the housing and construction and health care sector.

"The first Holcim Awards competition will give prizes for five independent geographical regions in 2005 and award winning entries will qualify for the global awards cycle in 2006," he said.

In each cycle, prizes value will be around US$2.5 million.

The Holcim awards 'best project' for 2004 was presented to National Water supply and Drainage Broad for the Wakamulla Rural Water Supply Scheme in the Hambantota District to provide drinking water for 6000 people.

The Water Board for the first item used Ferro Cement Technology for the structures of slow sand filters and Horizontal Roughing filters were introduced for the first time in Sri Lanka in this award-winning project. The technology resulted in reducing the project cost from Rs.32 million to 25.5 million.

The merit award for contribution to environment was awarded to Hikkaduwa Coastal Zone Sewerage Project while the award for the advanced laboratory services was presented to ELS Construction for its contribution for the industry in both Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

Two merit awards were presented for research to S.K.H.Perera and Dr.S.M.A. Nanayakakra of Moratuwa University. The other merit award winners were L.H.Piyasena Company, Central Engineering Bureau and National Engineering and Research and Development Centre. (SS)
