Injury forces Muralitharan out of SSC Test by Sa'adi Thawfeeq Sri Lanka's ace spinner Muttiah Muralitharan was forced to sit out the second cricket Test against South Africa suffering from an injury to his right bowling shoulder. Sri Lanka manager Ajith Jayasekera said that Muralitharan was in intense pain and the team management had to decide half an hour before the start of the Test whether to take the risk of playing him with the pain or to rest him. Finally they decided to leave him out and play left-arm spinner Rangana Herath. "We would have risked playing him yesterday but then there was the chance that he may have to miss out on the ICC Champions trophy tournament in England next month," said Jayasekera. "Murali bowled below par in the Galle Test because he had some pain in his shoulder. We sent an MRI scan report to Dr. David Young in Australia on Monday to find out what was the cause of the pain and he replied that Murali had a fluid build up in his right shoulder and needed an operation," Jayasekera said. "Dr Young referred Murali to undergo the operation at Colombo's Apollo hospital, but the ultra sonic reports showed that the fluid was too deep inside and they weren't able to perform the operation," he said. Jayasekera said that they were in contact with Dr. Young and were waiting his advise on where and when Muralitharan can undergo the operation for the removal of the fluid. This is the second time in his career Muralitharan has been forced to miss out on a Test match through injury. On the tour to England in 2002, he didn't recover sufficiently from an operation in his bowling arm following a fall while fielding in Sharjah and had to skip the second Test. Muralitharan (32) took five wickets in the drawn first Test against South Africa at Galle not bowling at his best, but his performance enabled him to move ahead of Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne in the race for the highest Test wicket-taker. Muralitharan has 532 wickets from 91 Tests Five ahead of Warne who has 527 from 112 Tests. |
