Coordinated Development Plan between Central Govt, PCs

The second in a series of discussions for the launch of a co-ordinated development plan between the Central Government and Provincial Councils was held yesterday under the leadership of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

She met representatives of Uva the and Wayamba Provinces and discussed about the progress and policy decisions taken with regard to the subjects of Provincial health and infrastructure development projects.

The President instructed the relevant authorities to supply all the necessary buildings, facilities for surgery, ICUs and all necessary equipment for Provincial Hospitals and for improving the existing facilities.

Special attention was paid to the shortage of nurses in the country and the need to train an additional 5000 nurses to cope with the problem. Attention was also focused on enlisting the services of traditional Ayurveda practitioners to be provided through Government Ayurveda Hospitals.

The President also pointed out the need for a systematic road development plan for the provinces where a whole road network could be constructed at once instead of being done in stages and also the financial and other benefits that would accrue by this method. Attention was also paid on the possibility of using the skills and expertise available at local level in the provinces in the road construction exercise.

The Governors of Uva, Wayamba, the Chief Ministers, Ministers and local representatives, Officials, and officials of the Presidential Secretariat took part in these discussions.
