Amputee seeks assistance to get artificial leg

Dasse Mudiyanselage Wijesekera, a 37-year-old brick-maker of Anuradhapura Road, Kiulegama, Ambanpola underwent a road accident and became an invalid for life. On August 15, 2003 on the fateful day he went to Ambanpola to buy some bread. He was knocked-down by a vehicle that came from behind. He regained consciousness after many hours at Colombo General Hospital, where he was warded for treatment.

Wijesekera had not seen the vehicle that knocked him down. Nobody has seen the accident either. Some people walking on the road had seen him fallen unconscious. There had been no police action as it was not possible to trace the vehicle responsible.

According to what was reported to him by his family members first he was admitted to Ambanpola Rural Hospital and was later transferred to Kurunegala and Colombo hospitals.

His right leg was completely crushed and was amputated in an operation to save his life. He was transferred to Kurunegala Base Hospital where he spent three more weeks. He had to spend further two months at Ambanpola Rural Hospital to get his wounds healed.

As a married person and a father of three children he is confronted with the challenge of feeding the family and meeting the cost of education of the first two. D. M. Darshanee Anuradha (13) the elder daughter is at Grade 7 attending Ambanpola Maha Vidyalaya, D. M. Channa, the junior son is at Grade 5 attending Ambanpola Junior School, D. M. Wisma Dev Thilina is an infant two years old.

He has been able to live on the savings for the past one year period. He told Daily News that he intends to get an artificial leg manufactured aborad at the cost of R. 175,000.

He is confident that he could get-back to brick-making once the artificial leg is fixed. He appeals to the kind-hearted people for help to raise the said amount. He is very confident that he could fulfil his responsibilities to the family once a proper artificial leg is found.
