Colombo Museum to get new look by Nadira Gunatilleke The Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Ministry has made arrangements to rehabilitate the 127-year-old Colombo National Museum at a cost of Rs. 80 million under the direction of Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Minister Vijitha Herath, a ministry spokesman said. He said that recently the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank Corporation granted Rs. 6 million to rehabilitate Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa display rooms of the Colombo National Museum. The museum has 22 display rooms. Those display rooms are in a very poor condition and need urgent repairs. The rooms display ancient equipment and treasures using outdated methods. The ministry has planned to rehabilitate the museum within two years. The rehabilitation will be done using local labour, local raw materials and modern techniques. The museum will be renovated to depict Sri Lankan history and cultural heritage. The Ministry has also made arrangements to build one modern museum in Anuradhapura to display artifacts discovered from Jethavanaya, Abhayagiriya and Maha Viharaya projects. At the moment there are three museums handling these projects. The museum will be built according to the latest technology to portray the past glory of Anuradhapura Kingdom. |
