Borella SIU Inspector granted bail on alleged bribery charge

by Sarath Malalasekera

Bribery and corruption should be wiped out from the country. Most of the Government Departments are corrupt. An innocent man is unable to get any work done properly without resorting to a bribe. Lawyers also have a prime duty to assist the eradicate of bribery and corruption from the country, observed Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Ms. Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena while granting bail to an inspector of the Borella Special Investigations Unit, who was produced before court on an alleged charge of bribery.

The Judge directed the suspect Inspector W. G. Kalansuriya, OIC of the Special Unit, to be released on bail in a sum of Rs. 5,000 cash and a Rs. 100,000 bond with two sureties.

The report filed by the officials of the Bribery and Corruption Department before court stated that the suspect Inspector had alleged to have demanded Rs. 20,000 from a monk who was a drug dealer and later a celluler phone from a woman drug dealer. Anton Senanayake, counsel for the Inspector moving for bail, submitted to court that the Bribery Officials had conducted investigations on a complaint made by a monk who is alleged to have been selling hard drugs.

Senanayake said that his client had arrested over 100 persons who were involved in drug trafficking. If the suspect is remanded to prison custody he will have to face those persons whom he arrested and remanded for drug offences.

Counsel also said that the Bribery Officials had not arrested the suspect with any items or cash. When officials wanted him to come to the Bribery Office, he had gone there and had made a detailed statement.

Anton Senanayake with Namal Perera, M. Wijesekera, Shantha Herath, Anjelo Benedict and Thusitha Dammika appeared for Inspector.

After submissions by the Officials of the Bribery Department and Counsel for the suspect the Judge granted bail and directed him to appear in Court on August 24.
