New set of policies for State electronic media

The Government will shortly introduce a new set of policies to guide the State electronic media, including the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, according to a new vision, Information and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera said yesterday.

This policy will focus on traditional as well as modern aspects of broadcasting amid the commercial trends, without depending on profits alone, Minister Samaraweera said. Other media too will be able to follow this code voluntarily, he added.

A preliminary discussion in this regard was held yesterday at the Information and Media Ministry.

Academics, intellectuals, media experts and personalities and officials attended the meeting.

The meeting was told that the proposed policy will be a voluntary one, without any legal binding.

A fusion of tradition and modernity, it will suit modern trends without neglecting local history and culture.

The policy will include a code of ethics for advertisements as well as guidelines on teledramas, education programs and children's/youth programs.

The policy will first be implemented by State electronic media and other media will be inclined to follow it in due course.

It was pointed out that children, women and under-privileged sections of society were being exploited in television advertisements. Steps will be taken to end this injustice.

Several sub-committees were appointed to expedite the drafting of this policy. The sub-committee on drafting the entire policy will be headed by Rupavahini Corporation Chairman M.M. Zuhair, PC while the sub-committee on education programs will be headed by Education Secretary Dr. Tara de Mel. Two other sub-committees on teledramas, advertisements and other programs were also appointed.

Another sub-committee was appointed on the separate Tamil channel to be launched in due course. These committees comprise Prof. Rajiva Wijesinha, Somaratna Balasuriya, Harendra Silva, Senaka Bandaranayake and several other members.

Information and Media Secretary W.B. Ganegala, Education Secretary Dr. Tara de Mel, Information Director Kanthi Wijetunga and SLRC Chairman M.M. Zuhair, PC, attended the meeting.
