Trincomalee Port to be converted to industrial zone, tourist resort

The Trincomalee Port and the surrounding area will be converted to an industrial zone and a tourist resort in sequence to a Government decision, the Ministry of Ports and Aviation said yesterday.

Deputy Minister of Port Development and Aviation Dilan Perera detailing the Government's decision to this effect at a ceremony at Trincomalee Port on Monday, said the entire development program was initiated by Minister of Port Development and Aviation Mangala Samaraweera and the scheme was under way.

Deputy Minister of Port Development and Aviation Dayasritha Thisera, Chairman, Sri Lanka Ports Authority Shalitha Wijesundara, MPs Jayantha Wijesekera and Najeeb A Majeed and several others were present at the ceremony to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

Awarding of cash prizes to port employees who completed 25 years of service and awarding of scholarships to children who received highest marks in the GCE Advanced Level examination whose parents were port workers, were also held.

Deputy Minister Perera said steps are under way on President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's directions to usher peace in to the country. He said irrespective of political differences, all should get together and join hands with the Government.
