SCOPP clarification

With reference to the news report in the Daily News of August 11, 2004, we wish to clarify a statement attributed to Mr. Jayantha Dhanapala, Secretary-General of the Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process states the Director Communications of the Secretariat for Co-ordinating the Peace Process Sharmini Serasinghe.

The statement regarding international organisations attempting to foist schemes brought from other countries was made by a member of the Jaffna District Consortium of Non Governmental Organisations and not by Mr. Dhanapala.

Mr. Dhanapala also briefed the meeting on the role of the National Advisory Committee for Peace and Reconciliation, mentioned by the President in her address to the Nation on June 12, 2004.

This role does not include the drafting of proposals for an Interim Authority, a task which is being undertaken separately by a team of lawyers.
