Working group set up to counter terrorism BANGKOK, Sunday - (UNI) The first BIMST-EC Summit ended with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announcing the formation of a Joint Working Group (JWG) on counter-terrorism by the seven-member countries to combat the menace in the overall interest of the economic and social prosperity of the region. Addressing a press conference at the conclusion of the summit, Dr Singh said the first meeting of the JWG on counter-terrorism would be held in New Delhi later this year. At the request of all the participants, India had also agreed to host the next BIMST-EC Summit in New Delhi in 2006, he added. The Prime Minister said there was unanimity among the summit leaders on joining hands in combating international terrorism. The seven countries pledged not to allow the use of their territory by terrorist groups launching attacks on friendly governments. He said there was willingness to share information and capacity building by sharing training progress in intelligence capacity building. |
