Fowzie instructs removal of unauthorised constructions

by Florence Wickramage

Environment and Natural Resources Minister A.H.M. Fowzie has instructed Kotikawatte-Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Sunil Kuruwita to immediately remove unauthorised constructions built on either side of the Kolonnawa-Lansiyawatte road blocking the drainage system.

Minister Fowzie recently visited the area at the request of the residents who informed the Minister that the road goes under water even after the slightest shower of rain due to the drains being blocked by garbage. Around 173 families (1,500 members) living in the area have been affected.

During the visit the Minister handed over to each family barrels to make organic fertiliser and three bags to separate their garbage.

The total cost of the barrels and bags distributed is Rs. 250,000.

Whilst encouraging the community to cooperate with the Government to ensure a clean environment, the Minister pledged Rs. 3 lakhs for the Pradeshiya Sabha to repair the drainage system.
