by Kumarasiri Prasad Saama Sevaya, reputed social welfare organisation to mark the 16th death anniversary of its founder the late Kusala Abeywardhana conferred the title Saama Shuri on sixteen personages who championed the cause of peace in Sri Lanka during the twenty years old ethnic war. A ceremony was held at the Negombo Town Hall on July 31 under the patronage of Industries, Science & Technology Minister Prof. Tissa Vitharana. Addressing the participants, the Minister said had it not been for the twenty year old civil war Sri Lanka would have ranked the most developed country in Asia. Both the government and the LTTE should equally contribute to the establishment of peace in the island. A multi-party advisory council to ensure the passage of peace is a must, he stressed. The Minister exhorted the public, specially the civil organizations in the country to exert pressure in the government as well as the opposition for an all-party approach; otherwise the politicians would choose to act on their own and lead the country to disaster. |
