Appeal on behalf of unemployed Muslim graduates in N/E

Secretary General of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress has appealed to Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama to intervene to ensure Muslim unemployed graduates from the North and East receive fair treatment in the recruitment to the graduate trainee scheme.

In a letter addressed to the Finance Minister, the SLMC Secretary General states.

"I have received representation from the unemployed graduates from the Muslim Community living in the Northern and Eastern Provinces to the effect that several of them have been left out in the selection procedures adapted recently to recruit graduate trainees.

I understand that only 42 Muslims from the Amparai District and 39 Muslims from the Trincomalee District have been selected for appointment out of the 196 and 140 persons recruited in total from these two Muslim majority Districts respectively. It is revealed that not even a single person had been selected for appointment from the Addalaichchenai, Alayadivembu, Kalmunai (Muslim & Tamil), Nintavur, Lahugala, Pottuvil, Sammanthurai, Thirukkovil, Irakkamam, Sainthamaruthu and Navithanveli DS Divisions.

"It appears that in the Amparai District alone the following number of graduates from the Muslim Community had sent in their applications through their Divisional Secretaries. Nintavur - 81, Addalaichenai - 30, Akkaraipattu - 111, Kalmunai - 236 (Tamils & Muslims), Pottuvil - 22, Irakkamam - 19 and Sammanthurai - 91.

"It should be noted that several appeals have already been made to the various higher authorities by the people of the Irakkamam D.S. Division, that Government officers from outstations are normally in the habit of avoiding to serve in their under developed and remote village due to non availability of basic facilities over there.

"It is very unfortunate that the people of Irakkamam area have now been deprived of an opportunity of getting at least a few graduates from their own village appointed under this scheme.

It should also be noted that several unemployed graduates who had obtained their certificates for more than 3 to 4 years have been disregarded and instead recently passed out graduates have been preferred for appointments. In the previous, instances when recruitments of this category were made the year of passing out was considered as an acceptable criteria.

"I shall therefore be grateful if you could please intervene into this matter and take immediate steps to review same by adapting a criterion acceptable to all.
