by Shirjaiv Sirimane reporting from Thailand President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga had bilateral talks with the Indian and the Nepali Prime Ministers soon after the conclusion of the first BIMST EC summit at the Foreign Ministry here on Sunday. This is the first time that the Sri Lankan President met Indian Premier Manmohan Singh. The President briefed the Indian Premier on the current peace process and the healthy political situation in Sri Lanka. She also talked about the success of the BIMST EC summit. The Indian Prime Minister said that India had always being a good neighbour to Sri Lanka and it would continue to be so in the future as well. He also said India would lend any support to help Sri Lanka's peace process. Earlier the President met the Nepal Prime Minister Nepal's Sher Bahadur Deuba, and talked at length on subjects pertaining to business and air travel. It was also decided to peruse further, the concept of finding a market for traditional items from both counters. The Nepal Prime Minister pointed out that one main reason for trade to be low between the two countries was the lack of direct air links between the two countries. He pointed out that SriLankan Airlines could include Nepal as one of their destinations to solve this enigma. The President who was in Thailand for three days also met the King of Thailand and Thai Prime Minister. |
