Compensation for all dead political victims' families

by Chamikara Weerasinghe

The Presidential Committee on Compensating Persons Affected by Political Violence has decided to recommend compensation to all who had died following political violence during the 2001 and 2004 General Elections.

Secretary of the Committee, Rajeendra Perera said arrangements will be made to pay compensation to families of all victims on an equal basis.

"Monetary terms are yet to be determined in this connection," he said. However, Perera said the victims' families will be provided land or an equivalent cash compensation He said there were reportedly 80 deaths as a result of political violence which includes the Udatalawinna incident where 10 people had died.

Perera said while the UNF Government only compensated the families of the Udatalawinna incident, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga had paid the family members in the case of all 80 victims Rs. 75,000 out of the President's Fund in 2003. Despite repeated requests by the President from the previous regime to pay compensation to all victims, plots of land were given as compensation only in the case of a selected few, the Secretary said.

Meanwhile yesterday the SLFP Laywers' Association submitted a report to the Committee that compensation be made to victims of election violence irrespective of political affiliations.

He said the UNF Government on principle agreed to the compensation relating to all but this was not done.

The Committee has received more than 2,500 complaints of polls violence in both General Elections.
