'My Dry Zone' an exhibition of paintings

'My Dry Zone' an exhibition of paintings by Kosala Priyam Kumara will be held on August 6, 7.30 p.m. at Thambapani Gallery, Duplication Road, Colombo 3, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The landscapes in the dry zone were the base of this exhibition he had chosen. "To me, who is residing in Colombo the idyllic setting between Anuradhapura and Vavuniya became the most attractive, says Kosala.

Kosala Priyam Kumara

Large exposure of land with tanks, lakes and other reservoirs, the scraggy jungle, gravel roads, large tracks of paddy fields, footpaths across the thick jungle, lovely railway stations etc. left to wilderness epitomised my drawings, he says.

These drawings are also illustrative of arid land and dry weather and its transformation during the rainy season. Drawings are a facsimile of the natural settings.

Kosala Priyam says his drawings have reflected the vision of Red Indian leader, Siatal to whom, "every footpath in the jungle is a monument representing man."

Daybridge in concert

A Daybridge International presentation - Daybridge in Concert, was held at the Bishop's College Auditorium on July 16 to a packed audience. The chief guest Executive Directress - Colombo Academy of Language Skills and Dramatic Art Varuni Jayasekera was welcomed by the Directress of Daybridge Iromi Weerasinghe. After the lighting of the ceremonial oil lamp the concert commenced.

Bambalapitiya branch presentation: ‘Don’t kill the world’.

The welcome speech by Rukshali Ratnayake was delivered with utmost skill and brilliance. Next was 'Don't Kill The World' by the B'pitiya Branch in which the main dancers were Fathima Afra and Zaid Ahmed. There were over 20 other dancers of boys and girls. 'Sounds of the Sixties' by Waidya Road Branch was met with a splendid response.

'King Solomon' was majestically presented with pomp and glory, lots of colour, action, emotion and good acting all in one capsule. Well done - this was Union Place Branch. 'Sudu Menike' by B'pitiya branch was excellent. Lilting rhythm with baila beat and shaky movements. Small playlet 'Mistress of the House' by Waidya Road was very humorous. Next was a dance by Union Place, 'Heal the World' where 38 children took part. It was a spectacular cast on stage - so many of them on stage - but well organised.

Country and western songs by B'pitiya Branch may have taken back the hearts of the crowd to popular songs of not so long ago - Tom Dooley and Happy Wanderer - here too there was a very large cast on stage but all well set and orderly.

'Journey to Kataragama' by Waidya Road was truly a treat to Kataragama. Costumes and trimmings and everything required was there and it was done in style. The Kafringa Dance was perfect and superb - timing excellent.

The Likeli and Kavadi Dance was done to the utmost satisfaction to the crowd judging from the grand applause. The three little kittens were sweet as they mee-owed along, as they had lost their mittens.

'We'll Be There' was a dance with lots of rhythm and style. 'Musical Drill' from Waidya Road was well trained and organised. 'Hawaaian Beach Party' was quite a grand beach party with lots of fun with guitar etc. The Hawaaian male and female dancers were elaborately dressed - displaying a lot of colour - quite dazzling. 'Down Memory Lane' by Bambalapitiya Branch took our hearts by Memory Lane when they sang the popular hit 'You Are My Sunshine', 'Jambalaya' and the famous from 'My Fair Lady' - 'I'm getting married in the morning'.

Finally before the vote of thanks each staff member came one by one to receive a red rose from a student, as a mark of appreciation for the tireless efforts they put into make the show a grand success. And lastly the Directress coyly came on stage to receive her flower. Three cheers were shouted and the show ended with the school song.

Good show, good fun and a big bouquet to the staff. The Directress Iromi Weerasinghe now walks off with another feather in her cap. Congratulations - Looking forward to another next year.
