BIMSTEC to take steps for timely completion of Free Trade Area talks BANGKOK, Sunday (PTI) In a bid to boost trade and investment in the region, India and six other Asian countries decided to take steps for timely completion of the Free Trade Area negotiations apart from introducing a special BIMSTEC visa. At the first summit of BIMSTEC, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh along with leaders from Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and Nepal signed a joint declaration, committing themselves to give a fillip to regional economic cooperation by a slew of measures, including development of infrastructure. BIMSTEC members decided to facilitate travel within the region for businesses, exchange programmes and tourism through a business travel card or visa. As per the declaration adopted by the seven nations, they would focus on specific areas of cooperation, including trade and investment, transport and communication, tourism, energy, human resources development, agriculture, fisheries, Science and Technology and people-to-people contact. "Future cooperation under BIMSTEC requires development of key infrastructure, particularly in transportation and communication linkages, to facilitate tourism, trade and investment and accordingly agree to strengthen and accelerate cooperation for developing concrete regional project proposals such as ongoing negotiations on road linkages between members countries," the declaration said. |
