News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Ministerial Committee to control COL by Nadira Gunatilleke and Dinushika Dissanayake Cabinet Spokesman Minister Mangala Samaraweera said a high powered Cabinet Ministerial Committee has been appointed to control and minimise the rising cost of living (COL). The committee will seek ways and means of taking away the pressure of cost of living from the people and reducing it. It will also make recommendations to the Cabinet to reduce the cost of living. The cost of living has gone up by according to global conditions. Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama, Power and Energy Minister Susil Premajayantha, Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, Agriculture, Lands and Livestock Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Small and Medium Industries Minister Lal Kantha are the members of this committee. The Government has also decided to immediately halt the proposed divestiture of the State Timber Corporation, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Mangala Samaraweera said yesterday. In August 2003, under the previous regime, the Public Enterprises Reform Commission was handed the inspection of the proposed diversification of the State Timber Corporation. Environment and Natural Resources Minister A.H.M. Fowzie has obtained Cabinet approval to halt this project. |
