President Chandrika Kumaratunga arrived at the Bangkok International Airport on Thursday afternoon and was received by the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, Chaturon Chaisang, Sri Lankan Ambassador to Thailand, Ariyaratne Wijewardene and Mrs. Lakshman Kadirgamar. The President will attend the first BIMST-EC Summit which opens tomorrow, the Presidential Media Unit issued in a press release yesterday. President Kumaratunga was accompanied by Agriculture Minister Anura Dissanayake, Fisheries Minister Chandrasena Wijesinghe, Ministry Secretaries Tissa Warnasuriya and N. Bambarawanage and President’s Chief of Staff and Additional Secretary P. Dissanayake.

The Government yesterday brushed aside speculation that the country was heading for another war and stressed that it was committed to an early resumption of peace talks with the LTTE to achieve lasting peace and an end to ethnic strife.

Warm welcome for President to Bangkok Summit

Presidential Commission to probe roofing sheets scam

The Cabinet has decided to appoint a Presidential Commission to probe irregularities in the distribution of roofing sheets received by the previous regime under the Indian credit line, Cabinet spokesman Minister Mangala Samaraweera disclosed yesterday.
