by Dinushika Dissanayake Deshamanya Lalith Kotelawala on Tuesday encouraged visually impaired persons to engage in enterprises of their own. He was speaking at the inauguration of "Ratne Ceylinco Sarana Fund" of the Sri Lanka Federation for the Visually Handicapped (SLFVH), at its headquarters in Colombo. He said the newly established fund would assist visually impaired persons in every endeavour. He also said that visually impaired persons currently hold exemplary positions in commercial establishments, giving hope and encouragement to others. The fund was established for the welfare and relief of visually handicapped persons. This fund is principally funded by the two philanthropists Deshamanya Lalith Kotelawala and the Federation President, E.M. Nawaratne Banda. E.M. Nawaratne Banda said visually impaired persons do not like to be dependant." However circumstances force them to be so. This fund is to alleviate their poverty stricken lives," he said. A new building constructed with financial support of the Sarana Fund of the Ceylinco Group of Companies was named "Deshamanya Dr. Lalith Kotelawala Centre of the SLFVH". The land for the building and Rs. one million from the President's Fund was donated to the federation by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. |
