The Jaye Container Terminal of Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) won the first place of the National Award of Productivity 2003 organised by the Secretariat of Productivity of the Ministry of Labour and Foreign Employment for large-scale governmental service organisations. This is the first time such an important award was won in the history of the Colombo port, a press release from the Ministers of Ports and Aviation said. The national award of productivity rates government organisations such as schools, production services, government departments and offices of Divisional Secretariats. SLPA defeated all competitors rated as large scale service providers in the Government and private sector. The drastic changes by the SLPA management such as extending working days to 365 days a year introducing new incentive systems, worker education, signing terminal service agreements with major clients bringing employment level to optimum by introducing voluntarily retirement scheme and enhancing employees welfare facilities were the main contributing factors behind this success. SLPA was able to attract seven new shipping lines and earn Rs. 16.1 billion in 2003 as a result of the managerial strategies. Achieving 34 percent in growth of profit and handling over 1.96 million TEUs of containers, which is 20 percent higher than the achievement of 2002, is significant. |
