The Government has decided to re-establish the Road Construction and Development Corporation (RCDC) which was closed down during the previous regime. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse said yesterday that the RCDC which was a national asset and performed a central role in developing the country's road network would soon be re-established as a stronger and more efficient institution. "The Corporation would be set up again in the form of a cluster of three or four companies. We have no intention of privatising the RCDC or selling its assets. Instead the Government will present a Bill in Parliament shortly with the objective of strengthening the Road Development Authority and the RCDC," Premier Rajapakse said. Meanwhile, the Government has also decided to secure jobs for over 5,000 employees who have been working under the Road Development Authority (RDA) on a temporary basis for more than five years. Delivering the keynote address at the Annual General Meeting of the RDA Engineers' Association, Prime Minister Rajapakse said a Cabinet paper would soon be presented to confirm the services of these employees, the majority of whom are labourers assisting the construction and development of the country's road network. |
