by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Satellite health centres attached to the Colombo National Hospital (CNH) will be set up in Colombo and its suburbs from next year to reduce congestion at the main OPD of the CNH. This follows a discussion held yesterday between Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, administrative committee of the CNH and its staff. Minister de Silva instructed officials to implement a special program from next year to improve the administration of the CNH while upgrading existing facilities. Accordingly, those who are seeking OPD treatment will have to go to satellite health centres and thereafter, they will be referred to special units of the CNH. These satellite centres are to be set up at Nugegoda and Maligawatta etc. "These centres will be equipped with X-ray and ECG machines along with a small ward," said a senior Ministry official adding that only critical and serious patients will be accepted at the OPD of the CNH. He said at present the CNH has to treat an increasing number of patients at the OPD. "Around 2,000 patients are treated at the OPD while 800 are admitted." It has also been decided to set up separate special units and empower the heads of these units with the authority including taking disciplinary action. Following complaints from medical officers, Minister de Silva had instructed officials not to allow any boutiques around the CNH premises. "Also, stern action will be taken against unauthorised persons staying at the CNH and those who park vehicles without proper permission," he added. It has also been agreed to implement a master plan for the CNH. "Once this is implemented, ad-hoc construction work are not allowed at the CNH." |
