GMOA questions Health authorities by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi The Government Medical Officers Association(GMOA) yesterday questioned the wisdom of the health authorities in the appointment of the North Central Provincial Health Director as the Acting Director of the Eye Hospital when he is facing corruption charges. However, Director General of Health Services Dr. Athula Kahandaliyanage said the Health Ministry has not been informed of any inquiry against the person concerned. "We have not conducted any inquiry against him or taken any disciplinary action." Dr. Kahandaliyanage said the appointment was only an internal arrangement until a suitable individual was selected to the post by a board to be appointed by the Public Service Commission. "The post has now been advertised and applications are being received." A GMOA spokesman said the Director concerned had allegedly spent more funds for purchasing low quality medical equipment thereby involving himself in alleged financial fraud. He said due to the negligence of the hospital authorities, the GMOA's Anuradhapura branch members and consultant doctors at the Anuradhapura General Hospital had to make complaints to the Special Investigating Unit and even to the President on this matter. "An inquiry had confirmed that these allegations are true," GMOA spokesman Uditha Herath noted. However, he said now this Provincial Director concerned had been appointed as Acting Director of the Eye Hospital instead of any disciplinary action being instituted against him. "We are expressing our strong protest against such appointments and urge the Health Authorities to conduct a special inquiry into these appointments," he added. However, Dr. Kahandaliyange said the Health Ministry has not received any allegation against the Director concerned. |
