Cementing cultural, economic ties between Lanka and France:

CFI, SLRC enter into agreement

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

Canal France International (CFI) and Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) has entered into an agreement which will help further strengthen SLRC, while cementing the cultural and economic ties between Sri Lanka and France.

This agreement will facilitate the SLRC to obtain European audiovisual programs notably of French origin including the subtitling and dubbing rights in the local language. It also offers SLRC the support required to develop the professional skills of its employees.

Director General, CFI Jean Mino and SLRC's Director General Nishantha Ranatunga signed the agreement on behalf of their respective institutions at a ceremony held at the Alliance Francaise on Wednesday.

The agreement is also aimed at defining the methods of using the CFI programs by SLRC and the mutual commitment of each contracting party with regard to broadcasting of their programs and vocational training.

The SLRC will, in turn consider CFI as a privileged partner and be committed to promoting the programs CFI provides the station with and make available at their disposal the necessary premises and equipment needed for training purposes.

Director General, CFI Jean Mino described the agreement as an important one as it allows the two institutions to work together while fulfilling an important part of CFI's mission.

While commending the Bonsoir program and its team, Mino pledged to provide further assistance to improve the program.

Rupavahini's Director General Nishantha Ranatunga expressed his gratitude to the CFI for the valuable cooperation extended towards Rupavahini Corporation. "We are happy to continue with the CFI programs and also obtain further training for our staff. We are looking at a very long term relationship with the CFI," he added.

CFI has also donated digital equipment valued at Euros 20,000 to Bonsoir in an ongoing project to upgrade the Bonsoir program which holds the record of being the longest running English language program in the 25 year old history of television in Sri Lanka.

Deputy Head of Mission Gael de Maisonneuve and CFI's Director for Partner Relations in charge of Asia Pacific Region Guy Muller also addressed the gathering.
