Four bodies brought to Galle:

Oil tanker towed into Lankan waters

by Manjula Fernando

The oil tanker Setia Jaya destroyed in a sudden explosion nearly two weeks ago was towed into Sri Lankan territorial waters yesterday under the Sri Lankan Ports Authority (SLPA) supervision, Ports Ministry sources said.

The sources confirmed that four bodies of the crew of the vessel were also brought to Galle yesterday.

The vessel has been towed to Sri Lankan territorial waters and anchored outside the Galle Port. Sri Lankan Merchant shipping division received permission from the Singaporean Merchant Shipping authorities yesterday to board the oil tanker to conduct a preliminary assessment.

A team of Fire Brigade officials and the Government Analyst are scheduled to inspect the oil tanker today to decide on the possibility of towing the oil tanker into the Galle Port.

The assessment is to determine whether it is safe to tow the ship close to the Galle port.

The Singapore registered vessel was destroyed in a sudden explosion on July 18 killing six of its crew including two engineers, following which the ship was abandoned by the crew and its captain.

Six sailors including some who jumped overboard after the explosion in the engine room are reported missing.

The ship's agents sought SLPA assistance to salvage the tanker and recover five bodies left in the vessel.

An investigation into the explosion will be carried out when the tanker is towed near the Galle port, sources said.
