HC Judge escapes rape attack

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya and Sandasen Marasinghe

A woman High Court judge of the Balapitiya court came close to being raped when two strangers broke into her quarters in the wee hours of yesterday, Police said.

The judge escaped with an injured eye in the attack by one of the suspects armed with a knife.

According to Elpitiya SSP B.P.B. Ayupala, the two men had first sneaked into the compound of the judges' quarters escaping the attention of the Police guard.

Preliminary investigations had revealed that one of the suspects had entered the quarters through a fanlight of the bathroom attached to the judge's room while the other suspect had stayed outside. At the time only the High Court judge and her female domestic was in the quarters.

It is alleged that the suspect had tried to rape the High Court judge at knife point, the SSP said. Although she had screamed for help, the servant could not come to her aid since her door was locked, the SSP added.

With the alarm being raised, the suspect had punched the judge on her left eye and had got away with her handbag, mobile phone and Rs 5000.

Police hunting for the suspects last evening arrested several persons, the SSP said.

Meanwhile, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and the High Court Judges Association has called for enhanced security for Judges following yesterday's incident at the Balapitiya Judge's quarters where an intruder forcibly entered the official bungalow of a female High Court Judge.

The JSC Secretary Chandra Jayatilake said in a circular on June 11 they had already communicated with the IGP on the urgency of increasing the judges' security.

In the circular, the JSC observed that police officers who engaged in security service at the official bungalows of judges and Court Officers remain unchanged for long periods.

The JSC maintained that the security officers at the official bungalows should be changed daily while court officers should be changed at least once every three months.

Jayatilake said it was reported that police officers on duty at the Balapitiya Judges' Quarters were fast asleep during yesterday's incident. He said it was apparent that no action has been taken with regard to the circular.
