EDB Export Design awards ceremony

by Ramani Kangaraarachchi

The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) will hold an Export Design Awards Ceremony for the first time concentrating on seven products to coincide with their 25th anniversary to be held next month. The products include apparel, handlooms, jewellery, giftware, toys, footware and ceramics according to Assistant Director, Product Management EDB Madhawa Waidyaratna.

Over one hundred and fifty applicants from these sectors will participate in the "Sri Lanka Export Designs Gold Award Trophy 2004".

The highest number of applicants are from the jewellery sector. Director EDB, Indira Malwatta said that this award is based on two factors, one is the potential and the other is design intensiveness as the key factor for the success of the international market depends on designs and innovative talents. However, most of the industrialists do not know where the talents are and talented people don't know where the industrialists are, she said. Therefore the EDB hopes that this event will bridge the gap.

The competition is open to all Sri Lankans except employees of the EDB and the University of Moratuwa who will be the judges. Applicants should have a considerable amount of exposure towards the relevant sectors.

They should submit their paper designs by August 25 and those who qualify will be asked to produce the actual piece of the product where the finalists will be announced by September 7, Assistant Director Waidyaratna said.

The EDB has planned to award a cash award of Rs. 25,000 as the first prize apart from the trophy and Rs. 15,000, 10,000 respectively for the second and third prize winners with certificates. The final products will be exhibited at the BMICH.
