Business tour to Mauritius a success

A business delegation led by D. Eassuwaren, Honorary Consul for Mauritius and Deputy President of National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (NCCSL) returned after a successful tour recently, according to a spokesman for the organisers, the NCCSL Global Trade Links.

The National Chamber took the initiative in following up with the participants in order to find out the business potential in the country and to seek their views on the business tour.

The participants had successful one to one business meetings. In addition to the meetings with BOI Mauritius, certain Ministries and a city tour were organised by the National Chamber in association with the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

CEO of ETA Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. M. Ismail said that there is a lot of potential in the textile industry especially for yarn exporters and also for the production of sugar. He said the "Mauritius port can be used as a hub for African countries." The Mauritius Freeport is a duty-free logistics, distribution and marketing hub for the Eastern and Southern African region. Logistics and warehousing facilities are readily available for transshipment, consolidation, storage and minor processing of goods.

Mid-way between Asia and Africa, Mauritius is the ideal trading base for companies seeking to service the African market. Major international companies have chosen the Mauritius Freeport as their regional logistics and marketing hub.

In its strategy to promote the services sector, the creation of a commercial Free Zone through the Mauritius Freeport was perceived as a logical step to further develop the export of goods and services. "The Financial Services Sector is a continuously growing economic sector" said Senior Partner of SJMS Associates T. Someswaran. He said that Mauritius offers a blend of very attractive features and a highly efficient operational framework, which best answers the requirements of international investors.

Business Development Managers of Informatics (Pvt) Ltd. Chathura Manawadu and Heshan Beddevithana said "With the impending project of a 'cyber-city' in Mauritius, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is set to play a leading role in the economic skyline of the country".

The law in Mauritius incorporates a number of tax incentives for investment that differ depending on the sectors. These incentives comprise income tax relief, investment allowances and investment tax credits.

The National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (NCCSL) through NCCSL Global Trade Links organises numerous delegations from Sri Lanka to visit various countries to strengthen trade ties between the two countries, establish business links, source suitable business partners for Trade, Investment, joints ventures and services.
