MoU to promote economic, cultural cooperation between Hainan and SP

Governor Kingsley T. Wickramaratne of the Southern Province signed a letter of Intent with Wei Luicheng, Governor of Hainan Province, China to promote people to people friendly contacts and economic and trade inflows, to carry out exchange and co-operation in the field of tourism, culture, education, agriculture and communication technology between the two provinces at the Boao Conference at the Sofitel Hotel in Hainan, China.

Governor of the Hainan Province, China Wei Liucheng arrived in Sri Lanka recently, along with a delegation of 13 high-ranking state officials and private sector business magnates in the realm of trade, industry and tourism. Among them were the owners of the famous Sofitel Hotel, the plush conference site of the annually held Boao Forum for Asia. The first NGO headquartered in China with a membership within 26 Asian countries.

The program was co-ordinated by the Presidential Secretariat, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Public Security, Law and Order and Southern Provincial Council.

The delegation met President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and also Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote economic and cultural cooperation between Hainan and the Southern Province was signed by Governor Wikcramaratne and Governor Wei Liucheng at the Governor's Auditorium, Galle.

In addition to the Friendship-Province relationship, a Memorandum of Understanding for educational and scientific cooperation was signed between the University of Ruhuna and the Hainan University of China and also with the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) Southern Campus. The Chinese also signed an MoU with the Chamber of Commerce, Southern Province.

The Chinese delegation comprised Wei Liucheng, Governor of Hainan Province (Head of the Delegation), Xu Jun, Secretary-General of Hainan Provincial Government, Wu Shicun, Director-General-Foreign Affairs Office of Hainan Province, Xu Xiaomin, Director-General-Hainan Provincial Dept. of Development and Reform, Wu Wenxue, Director-General-Hainan Provincial Tourism Admin, Liu Qingsheng, Vice Mayor of Haikou City, Tan Shigui, President-Hainan University, Wang Sheng, Director-Foreign Affairs Office of Hainan Province, Deng Kui, Consultant-General Office of Hainan Provincial Government, Wang Jian, Vice Chairman of Board of Directors-Hainan Airline Group Co., Ltd, Ni Qiang, General Manager-Hainan Boao COSCO, Development Co., Ltd, Ms. Chen Jianjiao, Deputy Director, Foreign Affairs Office of Hainan Province and Gui Haihong; Secretary-Hainan Airline Group Co. Ltd.
