Elmo de Silva heads NCC by Richard Dwight At the recently held AGM of the 116-year-old Nondescript Cricket Club (NCC) Elmo de Silva, an administrator with organising ability was elected President of the club for the ensuing year 2004/05. It was learnt from Elmo who is also the Vice Captain of the Royal Colombo Golf Club that the NCC which had its origin in 1888 has through the years made a valid contribution in the promotion of sports and the fostering of a spirit of camaraderie and fellowship amongst its members. The club boasts of two swimming pools one for adults and another for kids which are well patronised. It has facilities for indoor badminton, floodlit tennis and a cricket academy for youngsters. Recognition has been given to the disabled with access to wheelchairs. For the promotion of fellowship the club amongst other things has two bars, one of which is air-conditioned and has constructed yet another bar on the terrace named the 'Prins Terrance Bar' to perpetuate the memory of late Vernon Prins who was a stalwart of the club. The NCC was the home for some fine Sri Lankan cricketers like - Vernon Prins, Michael Tissera, Ranjit Fernando, Ranjan Madugalle, Amal de Silva, Tony Opatha, Hashan Tillekeratne, Kumara Sangakkara, Russel Arnold and Aravinda de Silva. Those elected to serve NCC for 2004/05 are: President: Elmo de Silva - Vice Presidents: Ranjit Fernando, Leslie Hewage, and Chanaka de Silva - General Secretary: Camillus Abeygoonawardena - Asst. Gen. Secretary: Fazil Dole - Treasurer: Chamalath Kulasinghe - Asst. Treasurer: Jerome Rajendram - Bar Secretary: Lucky Fernandez - Pavilion Secretary: Lascelles Perera - Ground Secretary: Lucky Ratnaweera - Cricket Secretary: Marlon Ranasinghe - Swimming Secretary: Julian Bolling - Tennis Secretary: Lawny de Silva - Badminton Secretary: Rohan Ratnayake - Committee Members: John Rajapakse, Mervyn Jayasinghe and Lalith Gamalath. |
