Negombo Youth hold Saunders to a nil all draw by Bernard Perera Table leaders Negombo Youth SC and Saunders SC figured in the key match yesterday in the Kit Premier League Soccer Championship which ended in a nil all draw at the Sugathadasa Stadium in front of mammoth crowd. The match would have attracted more spectators if the authorities informed the press of the change of venue. Earlier this game was to be played at Wennappuwa. Saunders SC was in full control in the first five minutes of play with more possession. The midfielders fed the strikers well but failed to put the finishing touches to put their side in front. Sensing danger Negombo Youth players went on the offensive with national player E. B. Channa leading the way. Channa missed a golden opportunity of scoring when a 20 metre kick went over the bar. The second half was evenly contested with both strikers going all out to score. Here too it was Channa's misjudged kicked that failed to bring in victory for his club. During the last ten minutes of the game both sides missed as many as six scoring opportunities and this resulted in the game ending in draw leaving both teams on top of the table. A. S. G. Deshapri controlled the game. Meanwhile the high riding Ratnam SC went down to debutants of the Kit Premier League Kandy York SC by one-goal to nil at Bogambara Stadium. This victory is a big blow to Colombo Club as they too were within the first five in the table. Java Lane SC which visited Negombo to face the home team Jupiters SC had to be content with a two all draw. The fourth game played at St. Benedict's College ground between the home team Old Bens and Victory SC ended in favour of the homesters with the score reading 2 goals to one. |
