Reacting to latest bomb incident

PNM calls upon Govt to enhance security

The Patriotic National Movement (PNM) reacting to the latest bomb incident in Kollupitiya called upon the government to enhance security in Colombo City and take bold steps to strengthen the Intelligence Services which had been undermined during the period of UNP rule.

The PNM in a press release issued yesterday said it was under the cover of the UNP's so called peace process that Tiger suicide bombers infiltrated Colombo without any obstruction. It has now been revealed the suicide bomber who tried to target Minister Douglas Devananda had arrived in Colombo over one and a half years ago.

The release signed by Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thera, Ven. Dambara Amila Thera, Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekara, Dr. Wasantha Bandara, Piyal Parakrama and Dr. Chandana Abeyratne added that the Tiger tactic had been to threaten the nation by exploding human bombs. It is regrettable that certain sections of the media too had been caught up by this tactic.

The country should not succumb to Tiger demands by fearing these bomb explosions. The PNM would call upon the Freedom Alliance to take bold steps to strengthen national security.

It should also strengthen the intelligence services which were severely weakened under the former UNP Government.

The release further said that during the UNP regime intelligence units warned that Tigers were planning to target vital economic centres in the Colombo city. Certain NGOs which agitated then describing it as attempts to derail the peace process were today strangely silent when such a bomb explosion had taken place in Kollupitiya.

The release said that even though the LTTE had denied responsibility for the Kollupitiya bomb explosion there was evidence to conjure it as an LTTE act. No one other than the LTTE knew the technology involved in suicide bombings. The International Community should now understand that the LTTE was not genuine in its call for peace.

"We are eagerly awaiting the response of Norway and other members of the International Community sympathetic towards LTTE regarding the latest bomb explosion in the city".
