People's power strikes again

In a reaffirmation of the peoples' mandate received at the April 2004 General Election, the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) romped home victorious at Saturday's Provincial Council Elections bagging all six Councils, inflicting one of most humiliating defeats suffered by the United National Front (UNF) in an electoral contest.

Speaker loses pocket borough

Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara cut a sorry figure yesterday as he lost his pocket borough Haputale Electorate which the UNF won at the 2001 General Election. Apart from him a number of high-ranking UNP local leaders suffered defeats in their strongholds in the Provincial Councils Elections.
