News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Supporters of rival parties clash again by Ananda Pathiraja Following the shooting incident that occurred at Thibbatuwawa, Maha Kekirawa, between supporters of North Central Province UNP Candidate Keerthi Wijayaratne and a group of Freedom Alliance supporters on July 10 Saturday, the supporters of the two rival parties clashed again at the play ground of a college which was a Counting Centre, around 2.30 a.m. yesterday. According to Anuradhapura District Returning Officer U.D.Yapa, he himself and his staff became extremely restive after this incident and with the assistance of the police, managed to bring the situation under control. Haja Mohideen Sideek, Attorney-at-Law,Magistrate's Court of Kekirawa, making a complaint to the Election Complaints Unit of the Anuradhapura Police Station, stated that he was a supporter of UNP candidate Keerthi Wijayaratne and that in the course of the clash, a group of persons whom he was unable to identify man-handled him, but, he was not willing to enter the Anuradhapura Hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, Community Development and Estate Infrastructure Facilities Deputy Minister and Anuradhapura District MP S.M. Chandrasena said that the election was free from violence but, that his reputation was tarnished by UNP thugs brought from Colombo and that the shooting incident at Kekirawa clearly unveils the UNP politics of thuggery which will not be tolerated any longer by the innocent farmers of the Rajarata. |
