"The Freedom Alliance has won the majority of votes and it signifies that it has a clear mandate to govern the country," he said. Wickramabahu said this on being asked how he saw the Provincial Council Election result from a democratic point of view. Asked for his comments Wickramabahu admitted that the UPFA's victory was a defeat to their party the NLF too. "Moreover, the Freedom Alliance has defeated the UNP by a big margin although it might be argued that, voter turnout had been very low at this election," he said. "If you look at the brighter side of things, the success of the NLF's campaign against the sale of national assets to foreign companies and the designs of the World Bank as had the desired effect because many people seemed to have voted UPFA to win that objective, he said. He said the UPFA's victory also demonstrates the fact that the UNP is in disarray as a party and that people were moving away from it. |
