Lokubandara cut a sorry figure yesterday as he lost his pocket borough Haputale Electorate which the UNF won at the 2001 General Election. Apart from him a number of high-ranking UNP local leaders suffered defeats in their strongholds in the Provincial Councils Elections. Among them are Former Minister, the burly Ravi Karunanayake of Kotte, Former Minister and the Leader of the House Mahinda Samarasinghe along with his rival Dr. Rajitha Senaratne who share the responsibility of running the election campaign in the Kalutara district. Another significant feature of the outcome of the PC polls that concluded on Saturday was the huge loss suffered by the UNP in Wattala, Ja-Ela and Negombo, the three strong Catholic areas claimed to be supporting the UNP. Former Ministers John Amaratunga and Dr. Jayalath Jayawardene and Speaker Joseph Michael Perera suffered ignonimous defeats. The UNP lost Kesbewa, Moratuwa and Ratmalana in the Colombo district. Former Minister Tyronne Fernando made a strong appeal to the UNPers not to cast their vote for the UNP as a protest against the present UNP leadership. CWC led UNF drubbed in Kandy, Badulla The combined strength of the UNF and the CWC failed to make an impression at Saturday's Provincial Council Election in the Badulla District where the UNF lost all nine electorates by sizable majorities. Kandy District was no exception with the UNF-CWC combine failing to make any dent on the UPFA juggernaut. Among the biggest losers from the CWC was Faiszer Musthapha who was hand-picked by the party to be the organiser of the Harispattuwa electorate in the Kandy District. The UNP lost Harispattuwa by 6,000 votes. |
