An Agreement to establish the legal status of the International Federation of Red Cross and the Red Crescent Societies in Sri Lanka was concluded on Thursday the 8th of July 2004. Bob McKerrow, Head of South Asia Regional Delegation and senior Officials of the Legal Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were also present at the Signing Ceremony. The Agreement was signed by Mr. H.M.G.S. Palihakkara, Secretary Foreign Affairs and Alisdair Gordon-Gibson, Representative and the Head of the IFRC delegation in Sri Lanka on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka and the International Federation of Red Cross and the Red Crescent Societies respectively, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, states a Foreign Affairs Ministry press release. The provisions of the Agreement covering granting of privileges, immunities and exemptions to the International Federation are similar to the provisions in existing Agreements, Sri Lanka has entered into with similar organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The conclusion of the Agreement will facilitate the work of the IFRC in Sri Lanka in discharging its humanitarian functions and signifies Sri Lanka's continuing commitment to the Promotion and Protection of humanitarian norms, the press release includes. |
