Wildlife Conservation Dept gives seven water-bowsers

by Florence Wickramage

The Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWLC) provided seven water-bowsers worth Rs. 11 million to the field as filling up drying waterholes in the National Parks during droughts had been hampered due to inadequate facilities, DWLC Director General Dayananda Kariyawasam told the Daily News yesterday.

Inadequate water has affected management and protection of Sri Lanka's national parks every year. The drying up of small waterholes in the National Parks of Bundala, Yala and Wasgomuwa have had a serious impact on monkeys and deer. During the recent drought, the influx of salt water to waterways in the Bundala National Park had inconvenienced animals.

Water-bowsers can also help prevent forest-fires. Kariyawasam said fires are frequent in the dry season and are prevalent in grasslands which can be easily controlled if equipped adequately.

Kariyawasam said these bowsers would be utilised to transport drinking water for officers residing in remote places where adequate drinking water facilities, especially during the dry season are not available.

The seven water-bowsers have been provided with the assistance of the Protected Area Management and Wildlife Conservation Project. The carrying capacity of each water-bowser is 3,000 litres.
