Factional leader overruns part of Afghan provincial capital HERAT, Afghanistan, Friday (Reuters) Forces of an Afghan factional commander took control of part of a remote provincial capital forcing the governor to flee, in a fresh challenge to President Hamid Karzai's bid to disarm warlords. The forces of Commander Abdul Salaam overran parts of Chaghcharan, capital of the central province of Ghor, after firing "hundreds" of rockets that landed in civilian areas, Zaman, the provincial security commander told Reuters. He said he had no information on casualties. "The town is divided into two parts right now," Zaman, who only uses one name, said by telephone. "One part is under the control of government forces and the other is under the control of Abdul Saman's forces." He said fighting was continuing. Abdul Salaam, who was also reached by telephone, said he controlled Chaghcharan. "We have brought it under our control," he said, in turn blaming government forces for firing rockets into civilian areas. He also had no information on casualties. Ghor's governor, Abrahim Malikzada, left the province in the afternoon for neighbouring Herat province. "I left Ghor at one o'clock and right now I am in Herat," he told Reuters before cutting off his phone. |
